Midwest Update #4: Challenger Hits Nashville

Sep 18, 2008 at 3:20PM Cheston Carson

By Cheston Carson
With a name like Cheston, it’s got to be good.
Midwest Driver, Challenger USA Tour

(This is another in a series of updates from our drivers across the USA. We’ll be giving you snipets of their journey and, as always, you should check out the hundreds of awesome photos they’re taking at the Flickr page by clicking here.)

All sorts of family reunions happened along the USA Tour.

I had had a proper amount of rest last night, so I’m really amped up this morning. I can hear the distant cries of my Challenger in the parking lot, requesting my presence! But it’s probably just in my head. My Challenger has become so much an extension of me that I think I will have a serious issue when the time comes to give it up. The next thought I have is fuel for MY tank, so I make way for some breakfast, and I’m caught by surprise to see a new ‘09 Challenger SE in the parking lot at the Cracker Barrel where I stop. Sadly, I think my HEMI Orange Challenger was just enough to steal some of its attention. As soon as I get out of my Challenger, the occupants in the car next to me are exiting their car at the same time. They are all quick to pause and take a quick look at my SRT coupe. I chat with them for a few, then we all head in to get our fill.

Once seated I get the attention of the manager to find out if he knows who owns the silver SE parked outside. I’m delighted to find out it belongs to the district manager, who is in the back of the restaurant. The manager asks if I want to speak with him and, of course, I say yes! He introduces himself as Ed and I ask him if the Challenger outside is his. He says it is and is quick to tell me of his experience so far with the car. He had just gotten his Challenger the day before and had already been hit with a barrage of kudos from onlookers and Mopar fans. He tells me of how happy he is with the ride, handling and assorted other details. I thank him for sharing his time with me and in return he graciously hands me a complimentary coupon for breakfast. I guess it’s true membership has its privileges. In membership I mean, membership to the club of the few and lucky owners of this OUTSTANDING CAR, SE, RT, or SRT.

Travels With Chally #4: Corey, a Tree and “Challenger: The Musical”

Sep 16, 2008 at 2:19PM Corey Martin

Live…from the West Coast….heeeeeere’s Corey.
West Coast Driver, Challenger USA Tour

(Our drivers are getting loopy, so enjoy this edition of the West Coast tour. And for the latest photos from the tour, check out the Flickr page by clicking here…)

Eureka!

Nothing happened today. . .unless you count the fact that I DROVE THROUGH A TREE!!! HA! Little did I know when I woke up in Santa Rosa that I would be channeling Buckaroo Bonzai from the 8th Dimension! Needless to say, it made my day.

Natural beauty.

The thing about the redwoods isn’t just about how tall and large they are, it’s how many of those tall and large goliaths have grown in a given area. Sequoias, for example, offer an equal if not greater individual visual spectacle considering how much volume they have (the largest in the world) and how wide they are at their base. But those trees that are truly awe-inspiring are here and there, interspersed among hundreds of lesser trees surrounding them. The redwoods, on the other hand, overwhelm a person not only with their size, but with the fact that everywhere one looks one see enormity. Few natural things on this planet, I believe, visually make one feel as like an insect as the Redwood National Forest. Did I mention I drove through a tree?

Video: Viper SRT10 ACR Makes History at Nurburgring

Sep 9, 2008 at 4:07PM Chrysler Media Services

NEWS RELEASE

Auto manufacturers routinely bring their top vehicles to Germany’s Nurburgring track, considered the ultimate test of a car’s performance.

Chrysler’s SRT engineers, from the Street and Racing Technology (SRT) family of performance vehicles, did just that in August, and set a new lap record time for street-legal production cars in the Viper SRT10 ACR. They beat an uncertified mark set earlier this year by the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.

Having never tested the Viper SRT10 ACR at Nurburgring before, the SRT engineers had one day to prep and one day to get the record. Five laps in, the record belonged to the Dodge Viper ACR.

You can see how Dutch driver Tom Coronel handled the course in the video above.

“It’s unreal,” Coronel said of the Viper ACR, which he drove for the first time. “Here on the straight, the car was just pulling, pulling, pulling. It’s a fabulous car.”

The last certified record time for a street-legal production vehicle at Nurburgring was 7 minutes, 34 seconds. The Viper ACR shattered that time by nearly 12 seconds.

The certified lap times for the Dodge Viper ACR were as follows:

Lap 1 7:42.7

Lap 2 7:35.0

Lap 3 7.24.1

Lap 4 7.24.9

Lap 5 7:22.1 (Record)

Lap 6 7:24.5

Travels with Chally #3: The Challenger Hits the Bay Area ‘n’ More

The Challenger goes to the Bay Area.

By the Bay

There’s something about a racetrack. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but there is an atmosphere at the track - even on a practice day - that is very different from other sporting venues. Activity buzzes and anticipation sets the tone as teams tinker and test while fans wait to witness the results. Regardless of the track, be it a NASCAR oval, a NHRA dragstrip or a circuit full of twists and turns like the Infineon Raceway (Sears Point) where I am today, it is a feeling like no other.

Reborn to Run #3: Scott Keeps it Moving on the East Coast

Heading down the East Coast…Scott Vandekerckhove!
East Coast Driver, Challenger USA Road Trip

(Here’s another awesome diary post from one of our drivers. Please take a minute to read the whole thing when you get a few minutes…it’s well worth the time. And for hundreds of great photos, check out the Flickr page by clicking here…)

If you can make it here, you’ll make it…well, you know the rest.

I could have easily spent a week in Times Square alone with this car. The buzz in NYC was simply electric. But, as with all good things, they must come to an end. As the middle afternoon approached, it was time to head to Levittown, NY located on Long Island.

As I filled the car up with gas at a station near the Javits Center, I realized that a thick coat of dirt had gathered on the outside of my car. Priority number one was to get a bath for my Hemi Orange baby. Once in Levittown, I stopped at The East Coast Hand Car Wash for a deep clean.

Back in the day, folks referred to holidays as "Red Letter Days" because of their color on calendars. They were times of excitement, tradition and celebration. Well, that's how we feel about the New Dodge and frankly, we've always had a special place in our hearts for red.
