1989 Viper RT 10 conceptThis week from the archives, we’re taking you back to one of the most important moments in Dodge history: the birth of the Viper.

Before the sinister snake hit the production circuit in 1992, it debuted at the 1989 North American International Auto Show as a purely conceptual roadster. At the time of the unveiling, Dodge had no intention of bringing the Viper R/T 10 concept to production, but the immediately favorable response it received from both the media and the public alike quickly changed their minds. Just three short years after its inaugural appearance, the venomous Viper as we know it today hit the streets, kicking off a decades-long reign as king of the American track.
