Two words: Challenger Ships!

It’s surprising when you think about it. A little over two years ago we
were looking at a Challenger concept during a cold January in Detroit at
the North American International Auto Show. After a quick feasibility
study, we announced on July 1, 2006 that we would build the Challenger.

Now satisfaction! The 2008 Challenger is shipping to a dealer near you! We
began to ship vehicles today with nearly 1,000 vehicles built and a
whole bunch more coming behind it. Plans are to finish 2008 Challenger
production by the first part of July. So keep tracking yours. It’s coming soon.

I’m anxious to hear from all of the religious posters to the Red Letter
Dodge Blog on how well you like your new Challenger when it arrives. We
do read your blog posts and attempt to react where we can so keep the
comments flowing… and enjoy your Challengers out on the open road!

Sooo, I was first in line for the first ‘09, I REALLY wanted the stick anyhow, glad someone beat me to the only ‘08 sold. I have the VON and the the plant has accepted the order, now waiting for the VIN so I can track it. “Should” have it by August or September. Glad those who got the ’08’s love them.

Uncle Ray Ray: Your car is still waiting for a railcar in Michigan.

Tom: If your order goes to C Status then the Dealer has received an Allocation. It is assigned a VIN when it goes to D Status. I would be happy to order a car for you.

Travis: B5 Blue is a mid-year color because Hemi Orange will have to be removed to make room for it. Tentative plans are for that transition to occur in January.

Bob, thanks for the reply, I / we all appreciate around the office…My main point on the allocation issue is we have no idea as buyers if our local dealer will give us the allocated car or not. They could shelf my order and up somebody elses faste once they offer more. Bob, when a car is ordered, how long before one gets thier VIN? I assume if I get a vin, I am allocated??? Is that right?

In general,I guess the true test on these becoming a standard vehicle like the others on the lots or available will be when we here radio and see TV ads for them. Has anyone heard of TV commercials as of yet on primetime? I assume Dodge will hold off until the demand has been semi caught up and supply is more readily available.

I am leaning towards an R/T with the raised wing spoiler. But the SRT8 is also a possibility. I am sure the R/Ts will be modified to a similar horsepower once the start hitting the streets in decent numbers.

Bob, I am not far from Cleveland. If NY treats me bad, I would have no problem geting it from Cleveland if you are in that area. Thanks again for the info Bob.

Tom:1: No, the Factory would have no way of knowing if a Dealer was going to “over-inflate” a price on an order.

2: I haven’t heard of Employee Deals on Challengers. It is up to the Dealer if he wants to, but I will check if ’09’s are eligible.

3.I doubt it, because a Dealer has no real idea of how much allocation they will get.

A Dealer who sells a large number of Dodge Cars and SRT’s will generally get more Allocation. Yes, I would be able to handle that.

Julio, Hate to hear the bad news buddy. I would think that if you had a signed contract that states you get the dealerships “first” challenger then you might have a strong case. However, if you don’t have a “signed” contract which indicates the price they agreed to, then buddy I would say you might be in a no-win situation. They cannot simple negate a signed contract, and I would highly doubt that any Judge would let them do that just to make more money. It’s time to play hardball with them my friend, “IF” you have the legal grounds I specified.

Sounds ugly Julio, though I am not surprised…Too bad it is working out like this. this is taking a wonderful idea, and making it sickning. I think it is great that many of you are getting your cars finally, but hate hearing about this under handed stuff going on. I would like to here Bob’s answers to my questions in the post below. Bob we need you as a buying guide with this niche item currently in high demand. Again, perhaps he (Bob) can give us the lesson on ethics and what dealers have to or dont have to do with current and new orders. These quality issues make it worse. We need volume here, without that, market demand will stay high and keep prices through the roof with many dealerships, especially ones with low allocation on SRT8s.

I was really looking forward to receiving my 2008 Challenger after leaving a $2000 deposit with a local dealer in June 2007. He decided to cancel the contract and sell it to the highest bidder once the car hit the ground… I’ve now heard that I was not the only one that this happened to… Is there any recourse? Is there anything that people in my position can do? Is this legal? Anyone else out there going thru the same thing? I did call Chrysler Customer Service but the call was routed to India and I was kept on hold for over 1 hour. I was told that without a vin they couldn’t talk to me… Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!!! Thanks!! Julio commab@verizon.net

I placed my $5,000.00 down in Dec. and “would” have gotten the ‘08 for msrp. The ‘09 will also be an msrp deal, nice to have a NON GOUGING dealer.

This is my anxiousness speaking, but I think many people agree. Mr. Mallie, next time you make an announcement, be sure that the company is actually doing what you say. You posted on 28 May that roughly 1000 Challengers were built and ready to ship. Well, I am dash plaque number 990 and I still don’t have my car; it just went to shipping status as of 13 June. My car sat in QC since 3 June, blowing past the 2nd rescheduled delivery date of 11 June. Come to find out today, my car sat in a parking lot for 3 days before they even moved it to the rail yard yesterday, 16 June. This is after your foreign friend answering the Customer Service calls told me I needed to contact my dealership because it was already delivered. Lastly, it is projected to take until 24 June until it shows up at my dealership. I do not understand why I have to pay $675 for a delivery, when I could have flown to Canada and driven the car home for farless than that and had it 2 weeks earlier. I know fuel costs are high right now, but let’s be practical, this is pathetic. 11 days to get from Windsor to Washington DC?
You are not building suspense anymore, you are buidling frustration. You have quality control for the cars; maybe you need to QC the process in which people are given information and do a reality check on the shipping process.

Bob, can you clue me in (and others) how the allocation system should work for 09’s? Ex. I am planning on an 09′ SRT 8 or R/T, but I am concerned over some issues:
1- will there be allocation issues that backburner certain orders if they are not dealer inflated(over msrp).?
2- Will employee or employee family discounts be available?
3- Will dealers disclose in writing if my car will or is allocated for the build??

In your case for instance, if 100 of us came to you, I suspect you could not allocate enough cars for all of us.??? true/false?

This info will help guide us in the wings when heading to dealerships.

Rock: It all depends on whether or not your Dealer got allocation and how many were ordered at that Dealer prior to yours. We did get allocation on SRT’s for August, which is a month earlier than planned, which is encouraging.

And I do agree Bob Frederick has been incredible giving us information. I called the 800 customer service number to check mine this morning and they said D1 and a ship date of the 14th. I’m going to guess thats not right.

From what I’ve read, people that have seen one, say it’s beautiful, and those that have taken delivery say they happier than they ever thought with the car. So the wait continues, and I’m sure it’s well worth it.

Example Vin 8H299000 - 17 Jun, 8H299500 - 19 Jun, 8H300000 - 21 Jun, etc.? Might save a lot of phone calls to your customer service. 67. On Jun 11, 2008 at 10:16PM, Mike posted:

Travis, I copied this from one of Bob frederick’s previous post . Hope this helps.

When the order is punched in, it goes to “BA” Status which means order received.

Then it will move to “BX” if it’s a good order available for schedule. If not it could go to many different “B” status codes but I’ll cover two: “BE” which is edit error, in which a coding error is present and must be corrected before being considered for schedule. “BG” which means it passed edit but can’t be considered for scheduling.(For a variety of reasons like scheduled out).

A BX order can then move to “C” Status which is tentative schedule.

Then it can become “D” Status which is Firm Schedule at which point a serial number is assigned.
Next is “D1″ which is Gatelined which means the plant has sequenced the order for production and an estimated ship date is assigned.
    Build codes then follow:
    “E” is Framing
    “F” is Paint
    “G” is Trim

The unit is built at this point and goes to “I” which is final inspection.

“J” is unit passed final inspection

“JB” in the case of Challenger, unit is shipped to Upfit Center(For stripe).

“KZ” means unit released by plant and Invoiced.

“KZR” Vehicle within a few days of Dealer. Don’t usually see this code though.

From “KZ” it usually takes a few days to a week or so to get to dealer. Geographic distance of Dealership from plant can impact time of delivery.

I’ve got one more suggestion for Dodge: you should track down every ‘08 on ebay and penalize the dealer that ordered this car. It is sad that it has come to this. You have legitimate customers waiting to get their car and drive it, and these (explitive) are selling low number cars on ebay for almost $10k over sticker to some overpaid weinie who has no real appreciation for the car…just too much money to know what to do with. You say that you suggested to the dealers that they only charge MSRP, but there is no punishment or reason not to sell these cars for rediculous amounts.
I say, delay their order dates for ’09s so good, fair dealers get all of the ’09s first! Their has to be some way to stop this non-sense!

on a personal note, i have not seen any numbers higher than 379 yet. seems like the announcement of “1000 vehicles built” was a bit premature. unless of course, these 1000 cars sat at the manufacturer for 10 days.

ok everyone you need to read this the Budman has spoken.

If you have your Challenger now or it was shipped prior to today and they have not shipped any since Tuesday you should have it checked before you leave the dealer. Here is Email that someone sent me asking about the issue and here my responce email.

Can you find out what was the fix? I had to wait until late yesterday to pick mine up because they said they had to replace a fuse. If it is a pinch point I wonder how a new fuse what address this issue?

    First
Ask them what fuse they replaced was it the one that factory removes during shipping that keeps the car in limp mode and only lets it go 20MPH? This is in case someone steel’’s the car it will only go 20MPH

    Second
Ask them if the fuse was missing that is in the car to replace the limp mode fuse. The reason you want to ask this question is if a fuse was blown in another area they probably replaced it with the limp mode fuse because it was the only available fuse in the car. and it is probably the wrong fuse for what was blown

    Third
Ask them if the would not shift into gear when the shifter was moved. If that is the case the harness was cut.

Here is the fix and you need your dealer to do this ASAP anyway.
When the emergency brake is all of the way down a piece of the mechanism under the dash on the left side by the A frame smashes the harness and cuts into the wire that operates the shifter. Before you let the dealer fix this you need to climb under your driver side dash and set the Emergency brake and see if it hitting the harness. If it is cut I would demand a new harness. If it is not cut the fix is to wrap the harness 2 two times over with a thick Mastic. Mastic is a sticky tape that prevents cuts and punchers if applied correctly. Then you push the harness back up through the slot. and you are done. They say it is a 5 min fix.

Update on the Approximately 800 Challengers that are on a shipping hold. The problem has been found and the Dodge engineers have a fix for the cars. The issue is a possible pinch point in the wiring harness that would short and cause the fuse to blow that operates the shifter for the automatic transmission. I would like to thank the Dodge quality team and engineers for catching and fixing this issue before more Challengers hit the streets. There are Approximately 500 cars at Windsor in storage and 300 at the Brampton Plant in storage and receiving the fix. The Plant has had the modification in place since 6/4 pm shift. Car’s will probably begin shipping tonight.

Last year, Charger R/Ts were doing the quarter in 14.1 sec. @100 mph. and 0-60 sec. in 5.9 sec. The 2009 Challenger will have 20-25 more hp, so these times will improve a little.

It may not be as throughty as the R/T, but keep in mind…back in ‘06 the 6.1L Challenger concept was the ONLY car to be allowed to turn its engine on and rev the beans of out it. I remember that sound, and that’s what prompted the ‘08 SRT8 500 sale.

Seems the better wording would be along the lines of ‘FRONT TO BACK FENDER R/T SIDE STRIPE’, or some such thing. ‘Hood to Fender’ evokes a Camaro RS hood/fender strip style, which would be fine by me; my current muscle is a 71 Chevelle SS 454 drop top. Before anyone goes screaming MOPAR madness on me, my first choice dating back to my early teens was a 1970 Cuda 6 pack with shaker hood, so I’m trying to make up for lost time here with the Challenger…

I do know if you are willing, or can afford to pay 10k over sticker you can find the color you want, just call some dealerships in the smaller markets near you.

Anxiously Waiting: There are about 2700 dealers in the US. Each one was allocated atleast 1. So do the math, that leaves 3700 cars. If your dealer is getting more than 2-3 cars, he must be an amazing dealer that moves a ton of cars. My bet, you are getting scammed.
Kewl SRT: Look at the unofficial tracker; there is no link between VIN and build date. I have a 289 car, and it is in D1. There are 300 series that are already built.
Here is what I’ve heard, Dodge will get 1 car to every dealer in the near future. Then they will work on getting the additional allocations out after that. So, if you aren’t first, you’ve got to wait a little longer. The posting says they have built about 1000 so far. They are shooting for 230 per day. If they reach that goal, it will still take atleast 24 days to build the remaining 5400. I’ve heard they’re only around 100-150 cars per day right now, so they’ll be lucky to have them done by July.
And one more bit, my car is set to ship on 2 June. However, it is estimated to be at the dealership on 11 June.
Bottom line, great news that they are leaving the plant, but most of us still have some time to wait.

I would hate to think that there is something ‘not quite up front’ about my deal. signed ” still confused in TO “

Are 55 Challenger 500’s still being built in May, or has that date changed?

WHY IS A SUNROOF AN OPTION ON THE CHALLENGER 500?

It’s racing heritage badge should emulate it’s character on the road…like the old school Challenger.

I say this because as a future owner of one, and one of the first one’s to this dealership. Please don’t put a sunroof in it, but the MyGig is sweet!

Bob, I really appreciate it! You have been an amazing friend to the Mopar fans out here. The last digits are 8H289281.
Again, thanks Dodge and thank you Bob.
Dodge, you need to do something to acknowledge all of the work he has done for your fans!

Jono: My ship date is also June 2nd. It only takes a couple of days to move from framing to final inspection, then typically a day or two at the stripers. Mine shows D1 today still but the system is a day behind. Hopefully they are now on schedule, but they could still be a few days behind. When mine gets to framing, I will let you know. Send me your VIN and I will keep on top of it for you.

This is great news! Some questions: Does this mean they have 1,000 ready for shipping, or do they have to go through Quality Control and Striping still?
Anyone know about the tracker…I still have a ship date of 2 June via Customer Service and my dealer, but the tracker still says confirmation. If the tracker is correct, that leaves 4 days for framing, paint, trim, QC, and striping.

Welcome

Back in the day, folks referred to holidays as "Red Letter Days" because of their color on calendars. They were times of excitement, tradition and celebration. Well, that's how we feel about the New Dodge and frankly, we've always had a special place in our hearts for red.
