Today at the New York International Auto Show, Chrysler LLC unveiled its full 2009 Dodge Challenger model lineup. Pricing will start in the low $20’s.
The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger merges the best American muscle-car characteristics — unmistakable design, world-class handling, powerful engines, and technology — to delight driving enthusiasts across several generations.
“Our all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger is a modern-day muscle machine representing the best from the past and present,” said Mike Accavitti, Director, Dodge Brand and SRT Global Marketing, Chrysler LLC. “Thirty-five years following the debut of the original, we are bringing Dodge Challenger back and loading it with essential hardware, styling and technology desired by today’s buyer.”
The Dodge Challenger is the first five-passenger, two-door coupe produced from Chrysler’s proven rear-wheel-drive platform that delivers the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. Developed with Dodge’s credo of “bold, powerful and capable,” the Challenger delivers a modern two-door muscle car.
Three models will be offered in North America: Dodge Challenger SRT8®, Dodge Challenger R/T and Dodge Challenger SE.
Essential Hardware
The Dodge Challenger R/T features the new-generation 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine with a five-speed automatic transmission that produces an estimated 370 horsepower (276 kW) and 398 lb.-ft. of torque (540 N•m). For 2009, the HEMI engine is upgraded to get an estimated five percent improvement in fuel economy as well as an increase of 30 horsepower (9 percent) and 8 lb.-ft. improved torque (2 percent) over a greater range of engine speeds. The automatic transmission features fuel-saving multi-displacement (MDS) technology which increases fuel economy by as much as 20 percent depending on driving conditions without sacrificing vehicle performance. The Dodge Challenger R/T also offers a precision-shift six-speed manual transmission — the first for a new-generation HEMI-powered car — that produces 375 horsepower (280 kW) and 404 lb.-ft. of torque (548 N•m) when running on premium fuel. The Dodge Challenger R/T can go from zero to 60 mph in less than six seconds.
The 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 features an SRT-exclusive 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 engine mated with a new-for-2009 six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick that generates a blistering 425 horsepower (317 kW) and 420 lb.-ft. of torque (569 N•m). The vehicle can go from zero to 60 mph in less than five seconds.
The Dodge Challenger SE powered by the 3.5-liter High Output V-6 with a four-speed automatic transmission produces 250 horsepower (186 kW) and 250 lb.-ft. of torque (339 N•m).
Patterned off the Dodge Charger architecture, the front suspension and five-link independent rear suspension system on all Dodge Challenger models provide excellent ride and handling characteristics.
Essential Styling
The Dodge Challenger design team stayed true to the concept revealed at the 2006 North American International Auto Show, while drawing upon elements from the original Challenger. The result: a bold, aggressive muscle machine that blends nostalgia with modern Dodge style.
“Our designers wanted to capture the mind’s-eye view of what people today remember about the Dodge Challenger from 35 years ago,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler LLC. “Their challenge was to excite today’s customer by capturing the emotion of the original Challenger, while offering today’s comfort and performance.”
On the exterior, the long, raised performance hood with scoops and recessed grille with round dual headlamps are reminiscent of the original Dodge Challenger. The bold A-line, or character line, that runs from stem to stern gives the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger an instantly recognizable muscle-car profile. Retro dual rectangular exhaust outlets complete the look from the rear.
On the interior, the trapezoidal theme of the door-panel cove and gauge cluster, dark headliner and slanted shifter console are inspired by the original Dodge Challenger. The modern interpretation of the Dodge Challenger offers exceptional rear seating for a two-door coupe, achieving best-in-class rear head (37.4 inches) and leg (32.6 inches) room compared to the competition. Coupled with best-in-class cargo space (16.2 cu. ft.) — equal to the Dodge Charger — the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger offers added comfort and functionality.
Essential Technology
The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger offers customers a full range of innovative technologies including:
• MyGIG™ provides a cutting-edge multimedia audio and entertainment system, with built-in navigation
• UConnect® Hands-free Communication System provides convenient, voice-activated communication with Bluetooth® cellular phones
• SIRIUS® Digital Satellite Radio offers a variety of commercial-free radio programs and music

How sad that Dodge decided to screw over its Canadian customers on the Challenger. Canadian buyers will be looking at an “out the door” price of nearly $60k, thanks in part to the $2000 gouging for a couple of extra $3.00 “500 edition” badges.
Click on link below see what your challenger will look like in nay color and also two toned and with decals offered very cool site..
I did a two tone black with purple and man o man what a beautiful ride.
www.ridebuilder.com/rb/fun/challengerPainter.html
Has anyone received a VIN on their 08 or anything past a C status?
I’m back, honestly I thought I’d be Viper shopping by now, but I just read the 2009 Challengers Buyer’s guide.
At the bottom it shows the Track Pack Option available with the 6-speeed. “anti-spin differential (3.73 w/18”, 3.92 w/20’ wheels” NOW YOU’RE TALKING! That will bring the 0-60 numbers down to respectable levels even with 4000lbs and keep the warranty in tact. I’m going for the R/T because it’s old-school. I already ordered a 70’s pistol grip shifter that will be the first mod!
Thank you to the Dodge drivetrain engineer who pushed for this. It’s going to be a great summer!
Mopar to ya’
MY GUESS FOR RT PRICING IS $31,680 INCLUDING DELIVERY.
funny fact
Plum crazy was called back in the day (Statutory Grape)
My buddy had a plum crazy duster we named the statutory grape ape.Man that car was fast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Chally you may have hit it right on the head brother.29450 sound like a nice number I just hope they start the base under 30k..
I’ll guess $29,450
What do you guys think?
What do you think the base price for the rt will be.
lets see whos closest.
I say the base rt will start at 28,950
this will be fun too see who is closest.
I also say we should all try to meet up at the mopar national in Ohio in August.
That would be very cool.
I have a feeling the shaker hood may only be for the rt version the way the rep was speaking it seemed rt only.
Im right with you all that dodge is listening big time and they by all means want happy customers so they are trying harder than I thought to capture this market in a big way.
The shaker would be part of the ram air system they are offering and add a cam and the cnc heads and youll have a road eater on your hands.
I estimated that with
Ram air
cam
cnc heads
steel forged crank.
This should put this car over 400 hp easily, and closer to 425+ now add a cat back exhaust mod and your gonna be king of the road.
Side exhaust would be nice man I hope they offer that option soon or we can add that on as it comes on line.
I figure that odering may begin soon people so keep your eyes wide open its close very close.
One thing is I figured out the approx cost of my build and I may be over 40k with tax via all the gooodies Im adding.
wow.
Wifes gonna kill me,lol.
Notsure, excellent news. I want to get one of these babies on order.
Notsure,
Do you know if the shaker hood will be available for the ‘09 SRT?
“notsure”, that is awesome news. plum crazy, sublime, shaker hood. pistol grip has already arrived. my checklist says we only need side exhaust, white interior option and convertible. hell i’ll do my own interior work.
looks like dodge has been listening intently, just not saying too much. this is the best news i’ve heard in a long time.
if you have a car company that will listen and make what you want, just how you like it, it is like owning your own car factory.
what could be better!
the hottest looking car, the most horsepower for your dollar, factory/dealer installed engine upgrades, lifetime powertrain warranty on 5.7 hemi and smaller. 6 speed transmission.
i know i am getting the srt automatic for now, but once the convertible comes i’ll be picking that up as well!
Im sure Toad’s mom has been in a Challenger. In the back seat at least! He’s just upset that he doesn’t have the $$$cratch to by a challenger. What a LOSER! Keep up the great work Dodge.
Honestly ToaD at this point I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. Sixpak didn’t write that, I did. I’m not sure where my mom comes into any of this or why I should be out voting instead of asking for things to be included on a car on a dodge blog. I don’t know what “you buying” means and I don’t see any one asking for more weight. If you’re concerned about the government please go do something about it instead of telling us to stop worrying about a car on a car blog and wasting space we could be using to inform dodge of what we want(they’ve said they read this and that’s why it’s here). . . and in the interest of doing the same this will be the last thing I type in response to you.
Oh one last thing I was told the rt is being made in ready.
In:
Plum crazy and sublime green this year for those of you who want this option.
I actually had seen the pics of the two cars in that color today and possibly a burnt yellow not like top bananna yellow,I couldnt make out that color for the life of me it was not anything I had seen before but it was yellow(burnt).
I was also told a shaker hood id in the works!
So not to worry its gonna happen I had seen the pics in the demo car I was in today and asked if they’d make it in those colors and the guy just smiled,of coarse we are!
I know this they are taking orders on the Rt like in less than 30 days from what i was told mid april at the latest.
This is all very good news and to tell you the truth the car looked great in plum crazy purple.
A little to cartoonish for me but man it looked nice with that metal flake in the paint to boot.
I picked black because I like black!Plus I would like to use the car in a formal setting now and then(high-end) restraunts, staff meetings golf outings, and yacht club, and black would only do for that or I would have gotten the go mango orange.
This will be my daily driver for many years to come, the first month I have it it will be run to the west coast and back on so called business(silver state race).
That trip may shake any bugs out if there is any.
Maybe next year Ill run the coarse and compete once I have track time with the car and get to know it well.
Do you think the cafe standards may bring on a possiblity of a hybrid hemi challenger?
Very interesting thankyou frontyardrestoguy for clearing up the fleet requiremnets for Dodge via the new restrictions.
I wonder how well prepared Dodge is to meet the standards they have some gas guzzlers in the line up big time.
Kick the SE to the curb I just had a ride in a new RT and it is smokin fast for such a big car.
I work for a large vender that supplies Dodge and they had the car at our facilty today all day!
There was a raffle for the ride x 3 and I won a ride! I just wish it was a nice spring day there is still snow on the ground here.
A friend of mine won another ride later in the day after lunch he was speechless and stated he’s is selling his VW asap to get one of these monsters so he called it.
The interior is not bad as some had discribed and actully quite nice and very comfortable the seats are the bomb.
The two tone interior is beautiful grey and black.I could get used to this car as my daily driver very fast.
The center console has changed and I noticed a nice carbon fiber bezel around the radio now.The touch screen nav system was very cool and I was told it can also play movie files as well as display pics.
The seats had challenger stitched in red on top and bottom of seats it looked very cool.
The trunk is huge and I dig the fold down seats. The car was bone stock so I was told and I was not allowed to drive it I was a passenger only, and I was not allowed to drive the car or open the hood or look under the hood via the waiver I signed.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
I did hear a chirp in 3rd gear thats a damn good sign we will get one hell of a car.
The power band was very strong all the way to redline.
And ,yes it was a black RT 6 speed chrome 20″ and they looked great not out of place one bit.
Ill try to post the pics I was able to snap with my cell cam where and when I can.
Thankyou Dodge for the chance to get up close to one of the most interesting cars out of detriot in decades.
That made my month, now its time to wait till summer and that big day.
Funny thing is I looked at the calander and Im in Germany the week it may actually arrive late July if things go as planned for Dodge and thier schedule.
Jezzzzzzzzzzz what a great Monday!

dodgeboy, the problem is cafe now requires trucks and vans to be factored in as well. this is dodge’s core business, minivans and ram pick-ups.
Its a freaking car guys.
Lighten up try to put this much effort into voting or knowing how your goverment is screwing you daily..
My god get lives.
dodgeboy and sixpak again, definitely my feelings. I’ve been waiting 3 years for this car like everyone else so obviously I’ve been thinking over every detail about it for that long. If I’m going to spend money on a car that I don’t NEED I want everything to be perfect. On a purchase this big I don’t want any regrets. I don’t want to be driving my silver challenger 2 years from now and wish I could afford that special edition sublime one that just came out. I need to get this right the first time. As far as the person who said he’d buy another car, maybe he will? Say he’s equally impressed by the camaro and the challenger and can’t decide which he wants. If the camaro has a better steering wheel and comes in a color he wants he’ll probably go for that instead! Not everyone is 100% for the challenger. There are other options and you don’t have to like one 100 times more than the other. Little details make the difference in a big decision.
I agree (dodgeboy/Clo) , well said !
Go check out ChryslerListens at chryslerllc.com/en/chrysler_listens/?hrf=www.chryslerlistens.com
I think we all agree that we’re thrilled with Dodge for building this incredible dream car! Everyone is not going to agree about every detail- that’s what makes the world go around. That’s also why we need more colors,stripes,equipment,etc.- so we can all find something we go crazy over and make us feel like we have one that may be just a little different than the next guy’s. Like Bob said: Dodge is listening! So don’t put another guy down because he expresses what he wants- even if he says it a bit more emphatic than you would by saying that he make look at other makes. Likely, none of would buy another make, but threatening to do so is some people’s way of driving home their point.
By the way, the Challenger gets very respectable gas mileage for the kind of car we are talking about here. Dodge can continue to make Challenger for many years to come. CAFE doesn’t drastically change for several years, plus CAFE is just what it says: Corporate AVERAGE Fuel Economy– They just build enough Econo-Boxes to offset the lower number of Challengers being built. So I wouldn’t worry too much about them going away– If we buy them, Dodge will build them.
Furthermore, as time marches on,technology does too– by the time CAFE gets tougher, the Hemis will get more powerful and EFFICIENT! Look at the new 5.7 for ‘09– Variable Cam Timing nets it 35 more HP and torque is up to 404 lb/ft. and it’s 5% more fuel efficient!!
One more thing, there is no fuel shortage now any more than there was in ‘73. It’s just the simple matter of our need for foreign oil because we listen to Environmentalists and don’t drill the massive oil fields in our own Country.
So let’s not talk about the demise of the Challenger before it’s even on the market.
Buy one- buy as many as you can through the next several years, and Dodge will keep making them!
And, as Bob says: Express what you want- and maybe you’ll get it. Dodge wants to give us what we want– isn’t that obvious from what we already got??
cafe standards will kill the musclecar. not necessarily the price of gas. i think it was last months motortrend that declared the v8 dead and buried.
Unlike some posts… I do NOT believe that this is the last hurrah. The reason muscle cars continue to appreciate in value is b/c Americans love these cars, and they will always love these cars period. It does not matter that gas is $4, $5 or $10 dollars a gallons. the feeling we get when we are behind the wheel of a true muscle car is (as the visa commercial says) PRICELESS!!!
What I believe will happen in the future is new technologies will be developed to allow these cars to run on other fuels or with much better fuel economy… but in my mind a beautiful looking car like the Challenger never go out of style and will continue to sell for Dodge. Great JOB Dodge… now give us more colors & a convertible.
NOTSURE said :
P.s These cars will never be like the older cars that demand big$$$$$ the market will fall off drastically in the next 5 years due to the fact 5+ a gallon upcomming.
Be happy we got what we did from dodge.
Ya , perhaps like you say will happen - EXACTLY like ‘74 gaz crisis when ALL cars downsized … so who are you to say it can’t happen ALL OVER AGAIN , nobody knows and everyone’s hysterical today just like back then in ‘74 .. if not more then .
Difference is - today we can look back at car markets go strong every 10 years - they peak and then fall then peak then fall ….. if there is to REALLY be no more gaz cars in the near future (lol funny to think how many thought so too back in ‘74) then these will be worth even more than the originals are fetching TODAY . But that’s just my logic and theory for fun …..
Anyhoot I don’t care about all that ; I’m not in it for profit - what I care is getting the car that’s pictured in my mind in the color I WANT - not ready to accept any color .
Hey I’m cool heheh
I know I’ll be buying the Chally …. with the color I want if not Hemi Orange in the R/T 6spd this year ‘09 , then later in perhaps same color or Go Mango , or Sublime if I like it .
It’s a Challenger , and yes what’s under is all important and it has been covered very well by Dodge - kudos to them ….. that is why this is not an issue with me …. the issue remaining is COLOR in order to complement the rest
If you’re happy with your non High Impact color - good for you ! Until I get mine - I’m not and won’t be entirely … yes I am for EVERYTHING ELSE … just missing color .
As far as going to buy another car over color fits of anger - that’s someone else and not me hahahahawhat a joke - so don’t put me in that same boat to try to put weight to validate your point
You see I’m one who needs to be entirely happy when I look at my car - to have it just the way I CAN/SHOULD have it . Call me a poser for wanting COLOR - ya right ! What about the guy who wants it for all its under the hood … he’s no better too …. heck buying this car goes way more deep than posing for me - as a kid I got to taste these Mopars
…. but a dose of posing a beauty like this is in all of us and goes without saying (you can continue to kid/convince yourselves otherwise though if you wish)….. I just want it all like it used to be - or as close as possible …. and color is very possible … you may continue to see Black if you wish …. I’m only expressing that I want color no more no less and rebuting worthless comments while at it heheh
To sum it up, I am excited yet disappointed at the same time. I am glad that there are expanded model lines and color selection but there is a strange absence of all wheel drive that is so prevalent in the platform sisters Charger and Magnum. I was looking forward to a vehicle that could handle as sharp as it looked and feel a bit disappointed that they couldn’t make AWD work here with this coupe. That being the case, I would have also liked more colors for the SRT8 if I had to buy something that was only meant for straight-line performance (when given the same RWD transmission why not go for the big Hemi?). If AWD is in the car’s future I would like to know now so I don’t go making the mistake of buying something I will regret later.
This is a once in a lifetime chance to get a car that was almost never to be made in the first place keep in mind everyone is entitled to there own tastes.Right?
Black for me baby go mango orange was my second choice.
I have a torch red c5 that I settled on over black and you know what I love it,now its time for black.
Realize you should call your delaer or dodge if your so angry over limited colors that they are sure to expand in the next few years as FRONTYARDRESTOGUY stated.
Its not the color that is important here after all we got almost everything we wanted ,youll just have to wait till your color is spec’d for produciton.
P.s These cars will never be like the older cars that demand big$$$$$ the market will fall off drastically in the next 5 years due to the fact 5+ a gallon upcomming.
Be happy we got what we did from dodge.
Im with you FRONTYARDRESTOGUY,its the car Im interested in.
Im just happy they made the car, hell they could paint it hangover diahreria brown and Id buy it.
I personally bought a (go mango orange) srt8 my second choice was black and I will most likely buy a black convert for the wife next year. The black is metal flaked and is stunning in person I agree the car looks very mean black on black almost cuda like.
Please dont fret they will make the colors you want why all the BS little kid crap and threats?
True mopar fans wouldnt care what the color it was hell most of the cars where primer any ways.
Like I read in another post its whats under the hood unless of coarse you are trying to keep up with the Jone’s or if image is everything to you.
Sixpack please refrain from such inflamitory comments why cant you simply agree to disagree and grow up please and save your anger for your friends and or wife.
How absurd it is to bash others for what they prefer when your here to petition for your needs.
p.s. 45 k is chump change for this car!
Dodge you Rock!
The Challenger looks awesome in any color.
however, Bob Fredrick said to tell dodge what we want so that dodge will understand (or something like that)
i bought hemi orange, i think the black looks great, silver ehh. to be honest i would have preferred sublime, sassy grass, plum crazy, or a myriad of other colors.
But i am ecstatic to get what i am getting, and only asking for what i would have liked and what i will buy when it becomes available.
anyone that says that they will buy a mustang purely on color choice is full of crap. they would have already purchased it.
Anyone who says they are going to buy a camaro because they are fed up with dodge is insane. They will just be going through the same process with GM.
if you look at recent chrysler history, they never give you everything you want out of the gate.
pt cruiser, great looks (for some) but underpowered and no convertible. power is added later with the turbo and a ragtop eventually joins the line-up.
sebring convertible 1996, no power.
plymouth prowler, no power, and i think 1 color.
dodge viper which should be the most relevant, few color choices and oh yeah, no windows.
Hey, we are getting one hell of a performer straight out of the gate. all is well
Lol Sixpak I was so close to making that post myself! The people telling us to quit complaining about colors have all said they’re buying black!! Why do you want all our cars to look the same? I have a black car right now. When it’s clean it’s great, but keeping it clean is the problem. I don’t mind washing my car I clean the inside practically once a week. But when I get my challenger I want it to look clean EVERY DAY! My favorite color of the ones they’ve shown is the blue but I’m not sure it will hide dirt.
Black all the way baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its whats under the skin that matters to me at least, this isnt a 1970 mopar and this isnt 1970.
So maybe dodge thinks we have evolved a bit as a buying public, and Im sure they may be wrong but to make insults and threats isnt going to help one bit..
Buy what you want is america!
Try to applaude thier efforts and not deminish the hard work and risk it took DMC to push this car to production.
Ive personally waited 35 years since the age of 12 to see this car rebuilt and what Dodge has brought to the table is more than acceptable in any color.
I was going with hemi orange and changed my mind after realizing its not for me,but maybe for you.
That is what makes us all different, right?
Thankyou mopar and keep it up we need more and Im sure youll supply us with what we need.
Happy Easter to all and May is right around the corner guys.
It’s funny - the ones who don’t care here about colors - they are the ones who are buying Black , good for you !
True Mopar fans also are the ones who COLOR is an integral part of MOPAR HISTORY - a true Mopar Fans needs no explaining on this and even less be lectured on COLOR by one who is satisfied with a generic color aka Black !
Like I said COLOR is INTEGRAL TO MOPAR - one doesn’t exist without the other …. and I guarantee a shitload of majority here think the same !!! Bug off , we are proud of Dodge for building it and we want it ALL (or nothing for some of us) .
Are we to have 3 to 4 colors and see these every time we encounter a Chally on the road … and get bored ….. OR feel anxious to see the next exciting High Impact color the next guy bought around the corner … seeing them all lined up as a rainbow in a car show - now that’s an Mopar enthousiast’s dream fantasy come true !
I don’t see what is the big deal in asking ALL the colors - it’s just paint for you guys - but it’s EVERYTHING for us + it means SALES for you DODGE ! What is so hard to understand ! IT’S SIMPLE …..
I want to buy a doge Chally ONLY - but I won’t buy one until I get my COLOR ! I ain’t goin’ to go buy a fugly Silver then have it painted down the road LMAO common what a lame idea - what a loss of value TOO pfff
I think Dodge is playing with us and keeping us in suspense … I’m sure more colors will be announced at launch - they have to ! I mean if they came out on the Chargers - the High Impact Colors ; then it’S only natural for them to come out on the Originator - the Chally !
Coming out with ALL the colors doesn’t hurt exclusivity between SRT8′S and R/T’S - it hurts sales rather ! SRT* will always be unique - it’s not a color that will change that …. though not having a color WILL hurt a sale cough MANY SALES ! But I’m sure someone over at Dodge already knows that - they just have to convince the one who thinks otherwise .
Go Mango , Sublime , Hemi Orange , Plum Crazy , Top Banana , Stone White , Black , TorRed , Panther Pink …… we’re askin only 9 flippin’ colors or so to your additional boring colors . Make them all available in ALL the Years - and phase them in if you have to - we’ll wait a few months AND SURELY ORDER !!!!
I would buy it if it was puke green!!!
Color in a sense means nothing to me its the peformamce and heritage Im buying..
Im a die hard mopar lover and no little item like paint or a wheel will keep me from this car and what it represents.
Dodge you did bust your asses and we very much appretiate it..
“This Callenger is right on. True Mopar fans are hip to those who are trying to kill the groove. Nobody is going to buy a Camaro or Mustang based on color choices or steering wheels.”
You’d buy this car if the steering wheel was a square and the only color was upchuck beige. If dodge doesn’t want to give us what we want we have other options! And yes people will look at the mustang and the camaro if they can’t get what they want! Looking at the replies here I’d say 90% are asking for some changes (mostly more colors). If these people aren’t “True mopar” fans what are they doing on a dodge blog?
This Callenger is right on. True Mopar fans are hip to those who are trying to kill the groove. Nobody is going to buy a Camaro or Mustang based on color choices or steering wheels. Great introduction by Jim Press; watch this Mopar Nation rock the industry. Happy Easter, see you guys in Las Vegas. Mopar rules, Kowalski lives,Muscle cars will always be a part of the american way, they will be faster, louder and more powerful.
Whining? Not at 45K; its not whining -
Of course I am very grateful for Dodge to produce the Challenger at all, but my sentiment remains, get it ALL right, or the cusotmer base could dry up. Making customers wait when there are so many options (today) is not a smart thing. As others have said, the Challenger probably only has about a 3 year run in it. How many are willing to keep waiting for Dodge to come out with the one thing that will tip your pocket book? Not likely, there are too many factors these days in making big purchases; economy, budget, your children’s future, etc. These all way heavily on our decisions. Having the options at debut are very important - yes even to those who seek the car for more than a daily driver. I would love to park a low production number (
I tend to agree with the fact that color options are too limited for the R/T, however we really need to settle down. This practice is nothing new for Dodge, remember the SS/T trucks, first Vipers, most early SRT vehicles? I wish people would take more time on this blog to applaud the many people who busted their butts and staked their careers on building this awesome car for you. You may not know how lucky you are to even be able to buy it at all. The fact that Dodge was able to push this thing through the pipes during the “dark years” and then through a sell out, is absolutely astounding. I personally want to tip my hat to everyone who burned the midnight oil and worked out the politics to make Challenger a reality to a mostly unappreciative public who is always quick to complain and nit pick.
C’mon Mopar faithfuls, we have had darn little for the middle income man to be exited about for the last 10 years, let’s let them know how much we appreciate this amazing car, and lay off the insults.
As many have pointed out, due to oil and CAFE, we may be looking at 1971 all over again. Get out there and buy your red, black, or silver Challenger and know that you are buying an instant collector car and never look back.
I think most the complaining is because we want Dodge to get it right the first time, not sit around and make plans for the 2nd or 3rd model year. As you said a lot of economic factors are squeezing cars like the challenger out of the market. It’s a sad thing to say but cars like this will not be mainstream for much longer and I’m hoping that Dodge will make the right moves before the inevitable deathblow to musclecars. If they don’t produce the car we’re asking for while we still want it people will end up waiting “til the next year” to get the car with that new steering wheel and bright green paint. But by the next year the car might not be around at all.
Everyone is calling this the last hurrah of true american muscle, so go out with a bang damnit!
C’mon people, quit all the whining and moaning about details here - given the current sorry state of affairs with oil prices, the environmental wackos and government regulation, we’re VERY lucky they decided to build this car at all. I guess that there’s enough of us muscle car guys left out there to create a market for the Challenger in spite of it all (though I’m sure that if some groups had their way, we’d all be driving battery-powered econoboxes within the next few years, and cars like the Challenger would be outlawed).
So, a year from now in the spring of ‘09, if gas prices haven’t spiked to five bucks a gallon, and if my local dealer is willing to sell one to me in the neighborhood of $30k, I’ll be driving off in my black R/T with a giant smile on my face………
Thanks Dodge for giving me an adrenaline rush for the first time since that road block back in 1970. But I am a little upset about the colors being offered for the 2009 model year. Even the BASE mustang offering has more colors than the Challenger. So please make an old dog happy and GET MORE COLORS!!!
Just got back from the Ft. Lauderdale Auto Show… Dodge has the 2009 R/T in High Peformance Red w/ the 20 inch rims on display and it looks incredible. Everyone coming by the car had something nice to say and the car was surrounded by people. Although the car looks great in pictures it does not come close to how great this car looks in person. My wife was leaning towards getting the Camaro for herself until she saw the Challenger live. The only real question now is whether we’ll have two Challengers in the garage or a Challenger and a ‘Cuda.
I too went all black ..
Yah know the spoiler and other black accents really look at home on the black,I was fearfull of the black but it looks to be the only color for me.The black Rt looks trim and almost looks like a cuda from a distance..
I have had many black cars and have never tired of them as I have some of the other trendy colors I had purchased in the past.
I do hope they add more colors for those who want them its a car that you can match with your personality ,dodge consider that.
just so everybody knows.
dodge had been taking a survey of what color you wanted your challenger to be on the canadian website.
the winner was sublime green, commanding 43% of the vote. second was plum crazy. dead last was silver.
dodge knows what we want. they are just not going to give us everything at once.
First of all, I love the new R/T. Thanks for bringing back the retro seats with the pleats! Great news on the posi-track rearend! My major disappointments are 1) color options (retro exterior colors and white interior) and 2) steering wheel. I have the sixth Challenger reserved with a deposit at my dealer. I’m really trying to decide whether to drop my spot and get my deposit back. Unlike others on this list, I am not going to purchase a Camaro or Mustang. I will purchase a Challenger, but now I’m not so excited about the first batch of 2009’s. I don’t want to buy a 2009 this Fall and then Sublime and Plum Crazy come out in the Spring! WHY ARE YOU LIMITING THE COLOR PALETTE? I have been anticipating this vehicle for so long - please give us the retro colors at the beginning of the 2009 production run. It is such an easy change.
At first I was dissappointed with no hood stripes on the R/T and body color rear spoiler, but once I decided I like black the best…I would still get a black rear spoiler and the stripes on the black SRT8 don’t look as good as the stripes on the other colors anyway. In addition the front chin spoiler and lower panels look at home on black as well…thoughts?
yellow i like to see.r/t i like to buy 5.7 is the bomb, the mpg difference compared to the v6 is? and finally the price.
” I am buying a Ford Mustang or Chevy Camaro to spite you. Are you listening!!!! I didn’t think so!”
lol spite will only screw you not them.
I agree they need to add a few more colors at least, however after that nice tantrum and after that little post they are sure not to add any more colors they probibly figure you belong in a mustang or fantasy camaro which isnt event on the production list for GM yet, hell its still being redesinged, youll see that car in 5 years when its too late.
What is it with this camaro and all the threats, the car looked like a crack dealers wet dream or some car my kid built on a play station game.freaking ugly is the word for it.The mustang looks nice but is a chicks car
Buy a mustang they need to sell some of those turds any way that saves more challengers for us who want them.
Ever think to repaint in a few years and you can have any color you want.
“You cant always get what you want”
Dodge did a damn fine job here and complaining and making threats isnt going to get anyones attn.
Maybe ask nicely and someone will listen.
Red Letter Dodge What is WRONG with Chrysler Dodge? Have you all gone MAD? Where the H*E*double toothpicks is the full color pallet?? I am NOT paying 40K for a car I can not find a decent color choice!!! And who is the Less that brilliant elitist who thought gray was a great color for a Muscle car - What are you smoking!!! Now I know you guys don’t listen to the public (oh G*D Heaven forbid, but c*o*m*e O*N! So you are thinking to yourselves - Gee, maybe is be screw with the color pallete and only release certain colors at a time we will get more people to buy the car as we unveil more features at a higher price!!!! IDIOTS! You are going to lose more people than you please. So, here is one. If in 2009 you do not have a full color spectrum array, I am buying a Ford Mustang or Chevy Camaro to spite you. Are you listening!!!! I didn’t think so!
more colors!!!!
Dodge you painted the daytona edition chargers last year in sublime, plum crazy and detonator yellow for the superbee.
you already know that these are the colors we crave. Why are you teasing us? pony up!!!
and don’t forget my white interior on my convertible, with white top!!!
I hope you’re going to be offering special order paints (for no more than an extra $300) so that I have more than six measly colors to choose from on my SE. I can’t even think of another car on the market that has LESS colors to choose from! People buying challengers aren’t looking for something that blends in like camry buyers. From what I see on the dodge site you have the basics covered, and that’s fine. But you need to add at least 2 more colors to that selection. No hemi-orange on the V6, that’s understandable since it’s called HEMI orange, and B5 blue will be a special edition on the r/t, that’s fine too. But at least give us plum crazy, sublime, or top banana. Or better yet, all 3.
Daytonakid, Not in the dark at all. What I’m asking about is the Interior photos for the 2008 ALL say “pre production photo shown”. The exterior ones do not. so why do these.
Sunshinne
I think you answered your own question.
The REAL interiors will be seen in the REAL production cars, they will be produced begining next month, REALLY!
Seems like you are in the dark about that point.
That’s what I’ve been saying all along! Guess I’m not the only one, Dodge!
More colors and stripes! Come on guys! We need color choices ALL THE TIME! Not just B5 for a heritage model- what about a few more at a time? Make the Heritage model or whatever its going to be, available all the time– phase all the retro hi impact colors in and out through the year on it and all models including SE R/T SRT! It can’t be that hard!
Great job Dodge, but buy some paint guns!!!
And get more Hi Impact colors in there at the same time!
And for God’s sake expand Hemi Orange to the SE and SRT8 immediately!!
“Oh yeah, BTW Yankee, in case you missed it…in 2010 there is a completely new base 6 cylinder and drive train coming out,
2009 will be the last year for that 3.5L /4speed set up”
If that’s the case, fine. It’s a shame they couldn’t have offered that from the gitgo.
When will we see the “REAL” interior for the ‘08 First Edition. All the ‘08 interior photos say pre-prodution. Why can’t we see them?
Oh yeah, BTW Yankee, in case you missed it…in 2010 there is a completely new base 6 cylinder and drive train coming out,
2009 will be the last year for that 3.5L /4speed set up
For all of you that might of missed the point during the 2009 launch, the R/T is gonna be the ‘meat and potatoes’ of the challenger line, which is why it will be available with more colours/option choices etc.
The SRTs are the ‘dessert’ like the other dodge/chrysler SRTs, limited in prodution and choices.
It is important that dodge sells many more R/Ts (than SRTs) because the new 5.7 hemi gets much better fuel economy, helps with the strict MPG regualations that are coming.
The R/Ts are gonna be the BIGGEST Bang for the buck muscle car on the planet, and I’m sure we will see more goodies for them to come…..mmmmm….cant wait!
OK Dodge, you say you’re listening to us. Well, if that’s REALLY the case, listen up. Some of my observations have already been voiced by others, but in case SOMEBODY there just might be listening…
- Get more colors for your SRT line. Do whatever you have to do to make this happen, and stop making excuses as to why you can’t do this. You CAN do this, but for whatever reason, you REFUSE to. There’s a good reason as to why over 50% of the posters here are all saying the same thing… WE WANT MORE SRT COLOR OPTIONS!
- And while you’re at it, offer another interior color option besides dull-as-dishwater black. Again… you CAN do this.
- I can’t believe you’re saddling the base SE model with a stuck-in-1985 4-speed automatic transmission. What the hell gives? Why not use the 6-speed auto that’s in the Avenger? Sure it might cost you a few more hundred bucks to use it… but you might even squeeze out a couple of more MPG - that alone would make it worth the extra cost.
- And while you’re at it, you should offer a 6-speed manual for the V6 too. Yes, it CAN be done, so DO IT. I think it’s a damn shame you’re hosing SE buyers with such an antideluvian transmission (or lack of a better choice).
Here we are… dreaming these things. Now it’s up to you to MAKE them. You CAN do it.
Other than these issues… good job
Any idea on R/T pricing? I would assume in upper 20’s.
Here’s some info I picked up :
”The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger will be offered in nine vibrant colors including Brilliant Black, Bright Silver, TorRed, Inferno Red, Deep Water Blue, Titanium, Stone White, HEMI Orange (R/T only) and B5 Blue (late availability SRT8 and R/T only). Black hood stripes are standard on the Dodge Challenger SRT8. The Dodge Challenger R/T features an optional hood-to-fender side stripe. Dark Slate Gray leather seats with exclusive SRT trim are standard on Dodge Challenger SRT8. Dark Slate Gray cloth seats are standard on Dodge Challenger R/T and SE.
For Dodge customers yearning for a modern Dodge Challenger dripping with even more heritage, there is the special-edition Dodge Challenger Classic R/T (late availability). In addition to everything the Dodge Challenger R/T offers, the Classic R/T comes in B5 Blue with black wide side stripes, inspired by the original. The Classic R/T will also feature unique script-style badging hearkening back to the 1970’s models and exclusive 20-inch heritage five-spoke aluminum wheels.”

What’s going on DODGE !? Hemi Orange is only slated for the R/T (in ’09) !!!?? What about the R/T Special Edition (later in year production)- it will only come in B5 Blue !!?? What a mistake - when you have another opportunity for the other retro high impact colors we all sooo longing for … where is Go Mango , Limegreen , and Top Banana ??!!!
btw DODGE - you’re going to put ”20in. heritage 5-spoke wheels” on that Special Edition R/T as I’ve read - would be smart to put bigger rotor brake package so that it doesn’t look silly through them new wheels .
I hope those wheels don’t make the Challenger look like a luxury boat - reason why the designers of the Concept ruled it out and opted for the wheels we’ve we’ve seen .
I can’t wait to see the stripings you will be offering too on that R/T Special Edition ! The regular R/T’s are in need of stripings too and we should have the option of checking the boxes on our order sheet - so they be installed on before delivery and not afterwards !
I forgot to include the name of the some, its called “Shut up & Drive”
very appropriate in my opinion.
Dodge,
here is a link great current song from Rihanna that would appeal to the young crowd if you include it in a commercial for the new Dodge Challenger
http://www.sideload.com/cb/track/?id=399357
CHRYSLER, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! GEEZE!
Dodge has really went and screwed the pooch now. I called to check on my order this morning, connected to their support center and I noticed that they installed a voice call routing system, the ones that you have to scream at in order to get an operator. I then told myself no it can’t be, please don’t tell me that this is happening. Sure enough, when Osama answered the phone I started to cry. THEY OUTSOURCED THE DODGE CALL CENTER TO INDIA. What’s next, we’ll be driving a camel and DODGING steers in the road that can’t be eaten! I am very ashamed to be a MOPAR person today.
I lost a ton of respect for these guys now. How do they expect a normal guy to buy a Chally if DODGE is OUTSOURCING THEIR JOBS TO FREAKING INDIA!
Dodge, Ya better start manufacturing bicycles since that is all people are going to be a able to afford soon!
I hardly can’t wait until Dodge comes out with their Challenger Convertible. The 09 looks great.
Youll make some nice cheese if you sell that 08 and go for an 09..
THANK YOU DODGE FOR LISTENING TO US! Now I just have to decide if I want to keep my 08 or get me an 09 with the new interior and 6 speed! THANK YOU ! THANK YOU! Dodge ROCKS!
all dodge vehicles except srt have a lifetime powertrain warranty. fyi.
that means if you buy an rt and the dealer installs some of the engine upgrades that i heard mention of, i would think it would be covered under warranty.
that is spectacular.
way to go dodge!
Most agreed cudaaar.Actually only 50 hp more for the srt8 over the rt.
Guess they want us to build them up.I did notice they are going to offer a ram air hood with scoop I wonder what that will look like.
All and all they did hit the mark and made one hell of a car here. Its going to be a bumpy next few years for the big 3 this may get interesting.
Id say if they where smart theyd offer 1000.00 -2000.00 cash back or towards options only for all new challengers plus a 5-50 warrenty.I know theyll do it eventully and that would only piss off the previos buyers they should put it out there for all us now owners.
This may force more buyer who will wait out the dealers to buy now while they can and gas is at least not 5.00 per gallon.
While most others have either stale looks or are going green this is a very bold statement for dodge it will bec ome legend like the old hemis mark my words. However never bring the money the origs do ..
Just drive it and enjoy it if its to be a garage queen think of the fact no fuel or high costs decades to come.
Like someone stated in an earlier post “soon all these cars will be just nice lawn ornamments” they may be right.
You only live once!!!!!!!!
I cant wait to see the decal packages for the car that sounds interesting maybe a strobe or hemi black out rear qaurter, or maybe the old scholl rt stripe like on t/a’s and old rt’s.
Very disappointed that there is no Hemi-Orange color option for the SRT. Why can you get it on the R/T? You MUST add more colors that red, black an silver for the SRT! Also, there should be more exterior differences between the SRT and R/T. How about a shaker hood or T/A-style hood? R/Ts are too close to SRTs now. They are also cheaper with only 75 less hp.
If you don’t have a sharp contrast between the two models, your R/Ts will sell and dealers will be left with expensive gas guzzler SRTs on their lots. Many who wanted a 2009 SRT will wait for 2010 when your 6.4 or 6.5 Hemi is rolled out.
They should punch out a few more old school color I checked dodges site and they have the 09 chally info up and running no top bannna yellow?
Im not a fan of pink panther pink but mopar fans deserve some of the old colors back.
Dont get me wrong from my last post Im black all the way thats just me I have never regreted buying any of the black cars Ive owned.Cant say that for a few of the others in what I would call cool colors at the time.
Gotta love dodges acessory list for the rt though ……….
car should be priced like the charger from what I have read now add on all the goodies youll be at 40k in a heart beat.
Srt mpg is going to really be a factor the numbers are qouted high I hear realistically 6 city 12 max highway that driving like a granny too boot.
Th rt is a bit more forgiving on the pocket book and almost buildable to the point of a srt8 see all the acessories you get to add, nice! Very nice great job dodge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joey Im right there with you brother its not often this happens in the life span of a true car lover as we are all.
This has been a big day in our house we all woke up talking today is the day and it happened check out dodged web site click on the 09 model and see the colors etc..
I personally dont like the cartoon colors as I dont like cartoon drinks either I didnt like them back in the 70’s too damn goofy looking in todays day and age Just my opinion.
.Im easy to please black is my color fits me well.
Ill have to add all the engine accessories cam, crank, heads, lowering springs.lets not forget ram air system, shock tower brace..
Thankyou dodge its perfect we cant have it all what you have done its a great start .
So I can get a manual in 2009? Give me a number(price) and Plum Crazy color and who do I make the check out too??
Incredible job Dodge!! But PLEASEEEE offer a few Hi-Impact Colors at ALL times! ALL Models! Buy a few more paint guns– Believe me, they will pay for themselves over and over and over again!!!! Phase them in and out through the year!
Also- Get us A Tuff Steering Wheel- 3 Spoke like these cars should have- at least as an extra-cost option! Nearly EVERYBODY Wants these things!
More colors like lime green and purple, dark forset or olive green. Also that rumored phoenix V6 would be nice a base engine for 2010.
And of course I need to know price. And one last bit of constructive critism, you really dont need the call the base level SE, just call it the Challenger. Save the badges for the upper models.
One other hand:
Thank You Dodge for listening to your fans by making this car in the first place.
Thank you for offering a Leather interior option on all models.
Thank you for staying true to styling of the concept and the orginal 70-71 models.
Thank you for trying to deliver on the Cockpit, and balancing cost cutting decisons to make a car for the masses and high expectations
Thanks for the welcomed suprise of the fuel door and front lift and back spoiler.
Thank you for making a Challenger for every budget
Thanks for giving the consumer an option other than the Mustang and upcoming Camaro
Thanks for making my personal dream of owning a Muscle car a reality. This is a special day for me. I am so proud to be a Dodge fan I could cry
Thanks for being bold and being Dodge
Thanks
MOPAR or no car
sincerly
Joey.
I hope the colors listed on dodge.com are just SOME of the 2009 colors. A few posts down you asked us what colors we wanted to see. We screamed SUBLIME! PLUM CRAZY! TOP BANANA! B5 BLUE! And yet there are a measly 6 color options for the SE, none of which I heard asked for. I will pay $250 for special paint no problem! BUT WHERE IS IT?
The R/T is looking more attractive, considering the manual, no gas guzzler tax, and the fact we can’t get our delivery status out of “C” for the ‘08.
Price? When can we start to order them? YELLOW???
So what are they going to cost?
What is the price for the R/T?
You mean that i can get my manual transmission now? woo hoo!!! We can I buy one? I’m in!
