Video: Meet the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 Designers

Feb 13, 2008 at 7:20PM Gale and Nielander

Continuing on our effort to take you into the heads of the folks who work here, enjoy this first portion of our RLD’s sit down with 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 designers Jeff Gale and Brian Nielander…a conversation inspired in large part by the 83 pages (no exaggeration) of questions the Red Letter community sent along back in November and December.

Plenty, plenty more of this to come…

I must say the showroom model is a letdown (for me) from the concept both in the exterior & interior changes. I understand the whole “economies of scale” arguments but why drop a Charger interior into the Challenger? The metallic finishes, trapezoidal shapes, all leather seats, cylinder head elements, and worst of all (BLASPHEMY) you dumped the pistol grip shifter??? What a horrible decision.

On the exterior…gutter strips? Blech! UGLY!! B-Pillar?? C’mon…try to step outside of the easy path and do a true hardtop. I know lots of folks are defending this but the look is so much better without.

I understand the reality that concepts & production vehicles seldom look alike but I think you could’ve done better.

    Hey ChallengerFan
Have you ever heard that wearing the colour black will make you look slimmer!
If you look close you will see that the car looks very ‘chunky’ because of the high belt line and smallish windows
The black at the bottom fools the eye and makes the car look more stream line.
Check out the front to front pix of the 1974 and 2008 together….look at the bottom and you see axactly what I mean.

You guys did a great job translating the concept car into a production model.

For 2009, please consider adding ram-air hood scoops, retro-style wheels and a more concept car-like dash.

RLD - Can we get any feedback on our comments regarding the production interior? You have had scores of comments on this site and other Dodge/Mopar/enthusiast sites and most people agree that the production interior is lacking. So, what is Dodge’s response? Have the right people been made “aware” of the problem? Can we expect some changes for the 2009 models?

Ya know, this is an unrelated post, WHAT GIVES REDLETTER GUYS? Is someone sleeping on the job? I’m sure you’re weren’t watching this weekend, fecetious of course, but DODGE TOOK 6/8 of the top spots in Daytona…..hmmmmm…..that’s probably not worthy of an article here?

    Impatient Skippy.
    Can’t wait to read it.

I like what became of the exterior… it’s just a damn shame the concept’s interior couldn’t have carried over to the production model. The concept’s dashboard especially was one of its biggest selling points, instead it ended up with only a modified Charger dash. Oh well.

Good work, Jeff and Brian. The Challenger looks fantastic. I have a question for you guys. Why did you decide to black-out the bottom edge of the Challenger?

Welcome

Back in the day, folks referred to holidays as "Red Letter Days" because of their color on calendars. They were times of excitement, tradition and celebration. Well, that's how we feel about the New Dodge and frankly, we've always had a special place in our hearts for red.
