Update: Buyers Swarm Dodge Dealerships for 2008 Challenger SRT8

You want popular? Try the all-new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8. Just in the first day of orders, more than 4,300 people plunked down a deposit for the American muscle coupe. And more than 6,000 have made deposits with dealers by hopeful buyers since orders opened on Monday, months before the limited-edition Challenger SRT8 goes into production.
“This is unprecedented,” said Mark Mallie, Challenger Brand Manager – Dodge Marketing. “Customers were actually coming to us and pushing us, so we thought this was a good time to take pre-sale orders.”
Orders are still coming in – long before enthusiasts have even seen the car. They’ll have to wait until the production Dodge Challenger SRT8 makes its debut at the Chicago Auto Show next February. But there’s no surprise about the benchmark performance of the Challenger SRT8. Each is powered by a 6.1 Liter SRT HEMI ® V8 engine, and features a numbered dash plaque, plus dual “carbon-fiber” look hood stripes that harken back to the original Dodge Challenger.
The car is available in black, silver or HEMI orange.
“More than half of the orders are HEMI Orange,” Mallie said. “It’s been almost 35 years since the last Challenger, and there’s a lot of interest. There’s a lot of people anxious for it. It’s certainly an iconic muscle car.”
The manufacturer’s suggested retail price is $40,095 excluding tax (base price of $37,320, destination of $675 and a gas guzzler tax of $2100). Remember – this is a SRT, delivering top-of-the-line performance, world-class ride and handling, benchmark braking and a race-inspired interior.
The muscle car wars start next spring, when deliveries begin for the Challenger SRT8.

There’ll be plenty of challengers at 40,000 to go around.people are worrying about a place to live these days.and hopefully it’ll knock out the speculators trying to make big bucks off die hard mopar people.
They are marketing this car to the right market the approx age is 25-45 +.
Im happy its priced out of range of some fool kids owning this car that could really hurt its future.
They will find a way however and lease is the only way some foolish inexperienced kid will own one of these cars.
The road isnt like a playstation game kiddies you really kill when you drive like a fool as most of you do with something to prove.I see it everyday as we pull mainly kids(females from wrecks daily due to poor driving and lack of experience.
Dodge build it and they will come,you did and we appretiate it .
Leave the mustang to the lids and girls they have always been a ladies car anyway.
As for the Camaro by the time that thing makes it out they will drop it due to MPG standards so dont hold your breath on the camoro coming out it may not be much of a long life for it being its slated for production 2010..

Out of 17 challengers that have been listed on ebay, only one has been sold(buy it now)
for 49,500. I think it got sold before ebay could take it off. There are two on there now,one went on to say,how important there customers were.I couldn’t stand it any more,I had to e-mail him and tell him what I thought of him.
I just left dodge dealer in So.Ca.,the salesman told me the price has gone up because some fool posted it on Ebay and got 60k so thats what they are asking instead of the 40k sugggested retail.
If I want one 60k ,5k deposit .
I told him yes I want one but not at that price.(so much for the blue collar car of old) I’ll wait for the price to come down when chevy puts out the camero ,then all three bad boys will have fun bidding for our attension ,then I’ll get my dodge.
Here’s something the marketing folks didn’t learn in college.
When all of the 08 Challengers hit the street driven by balding, gray, overweight men,the car will lose it’s appeal. The younger crowd will distance themselves from it because of the stigma.
So here’s what you do. Go out and buy a silver SRT 10 Ram. Take off the rear spoiler and put a high top Leer cap on the back, so the truck looks like Pappy’s (the 08 Challenger driver’s other vehicle). Then you smoke every Dodge Challenger on the street, and really make them feel good about their overpriced purchase.

I heard differently. The orders will be filled as customers placed them as to fill that demand first, then to the dealers.
I is clear from reading the comments that no decsions have been made regarding the available options for the new Challenger. Yes we know the external colors and the engine but all the other details are not readily avaiable. The 1970 model had several engines and a choice of auto vs a pistol grip 4 speed. What about the coveted shaker hood. Sounds like it will be a limited run of cars that will be sold to the highest bidders! As the others have said we will have the Ford and Chevy alternative!

My dealer told me that the only interior option was grey leather. Anyone know if that is true? I really want black like the concept car.

I would like Dodge to open the information tap, and let the rest of the future buyers of the new challanger what options they are going to offer on the next production offering next year. Question # 1 are they going to offer this car in a manual (6) Sped transmition. And what other packages will they offer. Weneed this info NOW. It will give us an option whether i will buy one or what for the new Camaro. I am certain the Comaro will have a manual transmition option. So it would be nice if Dodge would let it’s potencial buyers what it will be offering in the 09.
The dealer has forgottn to tell you he will be getting 5 more in in two weeks of the firstone delivered .So dont blow up and crash the deal if the first one goes to his buddy or preacher,lol.
Hell have to fill your order eventually mark my words dodge is gonna need this car out fast to stop some of their internal bleeding financially,and it will happen in large numbers the second year theyll pump out approx 30,000 challengers if not more now due to goverments new restrictions that may take affect approx 2010-2012.

NOw this is all personal taste is all but I have to say the new camaro looks like a clown car and its a long wait till 2010(ls2) or not.
Notice to the goverment putting all kinds of restrictions up on vehicles lately.This may be good or bad for us future gas guzzler owners.Keep in mind mine will be a once a week crusier I figure and will never see rain if I can help it.I was kicking around the fact the challenger may be a great daily driver but Ill tire out the magnum rt first.

They are stepping up a bit and being a car guy I do notice them really appealing to my minds eye and pocket book .You cant touch a car like this in any other car line for less than 50K.It is a true bargin I feel ..
Look at the vettes,sure you can get into one around 45-50k but thats stripped out.

I ordered mine 12/3 with no markup. Small town dealership that is an SRT-8 dealer.
I am extremely frustrated with your dealerships and your salespeople. I have repeatedly indicated to your sales force at a dealership that I have brought my Dodge/Chrysler products for over a dozen years that I wanted to be alerted as soon as it was possible to order this vehicle. I left my contact information last July with multiple sales people, and nobody (I repeat….NOBODY) has contacted me back as promised. I have owned nothing but Dodge/Chrysler products since 1985-that is 9 vehicles bought brand new from your company. I feel that at this point, based on the information in this e-mail that my hopes of getting the first year Challenger are about as good as a snowballs chance in hell, and I am really pissed. If this is how this company allows dealers to treat loyal purchasers, it is no wonder that you guys are not number one in sales along with a few other issues that I would love to discuss with your corporate office. The problem is not the product-it is marketting and customer treatment, and you cannot believe how angry and disappointed I am. I indicated to several dealerships in my area that I did want to be among the first to order and place a deposit to insure having a first year edition. The way this is being handled does not create a sense of urgency and get people into your dealerships, but rather alienates people who have been loyal customers for years and expect some consideration for that loyalty…..I welcome the chance, if anyone from corporate dares, to discuss this whole fiasco of marketting with somebody in authority.
yeah i have it in writing, went into the dealership today and was told he was going to take care of me. He said he didnt know how they were going to allot the cars yet though. Is it first come first served or are they going to fill orders a different way? anyone know? I had my deposit on the 3rd! they said 4700 were placed in day one that wouls put me in one wouldnt it?

I know the owner of our local dealership well he sold me my viper and that has nothing to do with the fact I have it in writing no mark up buyer to pay actual price displayed below on invoice.
It is signed by the owner.
He also added if car is not delivered as quoted I get 5k off any dodge vehicle immedialtey including a new challenger/5.7 or srt.
So Im not worried especially over a car .Now if it was a women thats different.

Anyone here that claims they paid MSRP for this car are flat out LIARS unless they own a dealership. If they think they ordered one for MSRP the dealer that they ordered it from will bend them over when it arrives. They are merely a saftey net for the dealer that orders one.
I sure hope they dont jack you around it would be fraud if they did you have the purchase in writing…
This in in response to moshahid. I walked into the local dealer on December 8th and ordered a black one with all the options and paid 62k out the door taxes included. You paid much less than I did.
btw.. i ordered it on the 3rd and nobody (even the GM) knew it was up for order. Can he just sell the car from underneath me even if we already agreed to a price and I have a deposit with paperwork? Anyone know if Dodge even cares what their dealers are doing? Being up front about the price is one thing but changing the price afterwards is something completely different. Any thought?
I ordered mine at a chicago dealership at msrp. I gave him a deposit and I got the paperwork with all off my order info. I called them back yesterday and the GM there is acting all wierd. He is trying to back out of the deal. I womder if he can just do that!

A 6 gear automatic with speed shift will help the market on my end. Being a disabled vet. when I got home from the war the 1972 Challenger in dark green was for me.
Alright this car is hot! But there is only one thing i have problem with, and thats this automatic crap. Whats the point!!!! There is absolutely no fun in just sitting there. Anyone can do that. A manual helps make you part of the car. I speak for myself and several others i have toalked to, and we simple will not buy this car unless its a 6 in it. end of!

THIS HAD VALUE TO ME. I DON’T THROW MY MONEY AWAY. WHERE CAN YOU GET 425 HP FOR 45,000. NEVER MIND HOW GOOD THE CAR LOOKS, AND I DON’T HAVE TO PUT IT TOGETHER MYSELF THIS TIME. The auto stick is like what I have in my magnum RT AWD and if driven right it is better than a stick in my opinion.Plus I drive in the city alot and a stick os not for that ..
So finally after days of thinking on this one I stopped by my dealership and made the order..
They thru in the Nav system free cant beat that..
Now thats just plain stupid talk guy no one here is jealous of anyone we are discusted in how dodge marketed this car for two years then trickles out small numbers to a select crowd.Now we all find out the #’s are going to be higher than announced.
By the way Im one of those rich pricks but I dont like to be ripped off and I found a dealer that got me the srt with out any mark up what so ever.I was going to wait but I had 50K burning a hole in my pocket and this is a great way of pissing it away.

I was in and out of the dealer in an hour and built one bad ass ride I feel.
I purposly waited till this week and things died down before I went back to drop of 10k for my deposit.Like I stated I was going to wait but knew the #’s of production where going to be higher than announced.
Guess what, it has worked my dealer is a srt dealer and wil get some of the first cars out of Detriot.
They have 4 orders and mine will be filled with the rest. They promised me in writing 5k off any other challenger order I would make if my order didnt go thru.

I’ve been following the challenger adventure since day one…it never stops to amaze me, the fact that common sense is NOT common.
I own a 2006 Go-mango daytona charger (#31). Love the car, the looks and comments I got because I had one of the 1st ones was great.
Even the cops I passed gave me the “thumbs-up”
However I did not have to pay a premium over MSRP, as a matter of fact my dealer gave me a $2k discount. No other dealer was offering discounts. It pays to shop around!
Now back to my point.
The price of any commodity is set by the amount the person is willing to pay for it.
If you want anything bad enough and are willing to pay…go for it! Do not blame the seller…its the buyer that is driving the price up!
Give dodge credit for releasing and early limited edition 2008 challenger.
I myself, do not want this edition.
I have waited this long, and in another 6 months from now, when the 2009’s are available with my 6 speed std. and in ‘plum-crazy’, then I will go back to my dealer and order it, at another reasonable price.
I suggest all the whiners out there, take a deep breath and let common sense dictate how and when you get your challenger!
Remember those dealers that added on 20,000 dollars to the stiker price and ban them. Award the dealers who were fair and reasonable with this car. Making a profit above the stiker price I can see for this car, but not 10,000 to 40,000 above. I will remember the dealer in Naugatuck Conn, who tried to charge me 84,000 for the car. And i will reward the other dealer I first went to, by buying my challenger from him, who reasonable and ethical in his dealings.
$40,000 for this car, thats crazy. I`ll wait until the leftovers are there and save $20,000. I have a 73 thats restored and will be worth more that the new one is comming.
Chrysler should be ashamed of its dealers to allow them to charge the prices that they are. I just got back from my local dealer in FLorida and was advised that he has deposits on 8 and is only getting 3. He told me I could get on the waiting list. HA! not a chance as HE even stated ” prices will be 12,000 to 15,000 over MSRP!” I guess its time to look for a ROUSCH.
The Law of Supply and Demand.
Basic Economics.
Demand outstrips Supply initially on all of these must-have car introductions.
If you can’t control your urges and be patient, and you have the means to pay the inflated price, then you can get a new Challenger before the rest. And you get to show off and feed your ego before the rest.
But, a year or two down the road, a guy who was patient until supply caught up with the initial pent-up demand and now equals or exceeds the level of current demand, or too poor to pay the premium, pays a significantly discounted amount and may even get 0% financing or rebate incentives. And the guy who could not wait, after the period of being separate from the crowd wanes, wonders what he could have done with all that money he spent as a premium because he did not want to wait on supply to catch up to demand.
I don’t think Chrysler has any authority to control the price above MSRP a Dealer will accept on a high-demand car.

I Checked with my local dealer last Friday told them to order first thing Monday the 3rd they called me to confirm they asked for no deposit and they said no mark up. They faxed me the confirmation order with the options on the car.I the only thing I added was the tire upgrade for the wider ones on the rear (I don’t need mygigs and sunroofs on muscle cars) and they told me they had no problem getting the order done. They also told me that not all dodge dealers are SRT-8 dealers never heard that before but thats what they said.
Whoever at Chrysler that decided to only make 5500 Challengers for the 2008 model year is either an idiot, or a genius.
I have been waiting on the SRT since 06 just to find out it’s another deal like the T-bird, GT and other comebacks were. I’m not paying anybody 20k over MSRP! The new plan is to find an original Challenger in a barn somewhere, sink 25K into restoration and have the real deal while the 09 Challengers are bumper to bumper on the highways 3 years from now. Dodge you really blew this one for a long time MOPAR fan!
I have bought 7 cars over the years form my dealer in central California. When I went to them to pre order I was told that Dodge was only making 4000 cars and that I could not pre-order. On top of that they want $20,000.00 over invoice. I guess I will be getting a different dealer.
I think Dodge should step in and step up and stop this price gouging by its so called 5 star dealerships. What a bunch of crap! I have spent well over $210.000.00, not to mention interest paid to Chrysler Financial, at this dealership over the years and this is how I am treated. Lied to and asked to pay over inflated prices. It almost makes me want to jump ship and buy a Camano…

chrysler always blows it. I bet when GM brings out the Camaro it will not be limited it will be in V6,small V8,and in the LT1.By all the coverage this car has had you would think the people at the top, they would look at all the orders its getting now at presale and say were else can we make this and how many can we get to market that will be for anyone. And can we make the CUDA also just as fast as this. We have Plants in the USA that are going down because of poor sales maybe we can use some of them to increase and bring back the work to the US plants!
My wife has been on the waiting list since day 1. I told her this would happen and now the wait begins. Dodge has the right car, but is choosing to regulate the supply with an overwhelming demand. This is leaving a sour taste in the mouths of those who have given praise to this car. Someone in cooperate better rethink this one!!!

This economy is too soft to jack the the public and our expendable cash..
DMC by the time you get the main line of challys out the public will be in an election year,not to mention the gas crunch dont get too greedy here the public is not as flush as it was a few years back.

I currently have a magnum Rt and love the car and I waited a year after it came out to get it by then bugs had been worked out.
Im a happy dodge owner 10-20 years ago that was not an option they have done there homework and Id buy a dodge again .
I hear the new 5.7 in mid 08 will be more gas freindly and that will debute with the chally in mid 08.
Mark my words the v6 is out first before the v8 I hear that is thier plan..
I can wait to get what I want 45K is a bit much and 12mpg highway is absurd for a daily driver.

Imagine this, all the worry on the CHALLENGER. Get real. Look what happen when the PT CRUISER/Dodge MAGNUM came out. BAM, market and roads full of them, gave it a few years and the same for this car.
They will make more than 5000 srts
more like 10,000 this is straight from chrysler.
Next is the chally in a v6 then comes the hemi 5.7.
The srts will be off produstion line and numbers completed by may 2008 then they will start on the v6 and Hemis I put down money today on a 5.7 loaded lets see if that happens.
I found many dealers not marking the srt up a penny look around the srt is still available and they will make more than 5000 more like 10kthey arnt letting that out of the bag yet.
I feel the srt isnt worth it and it may be a big mistake in 10-20 years from now but I want to be able to use the car as a daily driver and the srt is a bit much for that ..
I was going to buy one but due to the rediculous greedy dealers no thanks. Not now or two years from now when the price goes down.

SRT will get at best highway 12mpg city is 6 mpg let alone the price is absurd and we havent seen the car yet ,beware it is different from the concept the rear side windows changed drastically making the side profile not as stunning as the concept.
It is a cool car but DMC’s marketing of this product is a horrible way to gain cuatomers it actually pushes them away ..
Alot can change in two years to the average consumer..

I have been on 2 waiting lists where I live in Texas. I have been told by multiple dealers that I can not even order one until Mid 2008 and that the 2008’s won’t be out until June 2008. I think this is BS. We have been waiting on this car for 2 years now. They also told me that every dealership in the USA will get one and maybe two when they come out in June 2008 and that people are willing to pay anywhere from 16,000 to 20,000 dollars more that the asking price. They are going to make these cars a for at least 3 years I will wait and get one then when the price it reasonable

I am in Canada in a city of 200,000 with two dodge dealers. I have had a deposit of $5000 with one of the dealers for a year and a half for the purchase of a challenger . I am number three of five that have given deposits at this dealership. My dealer tells me that 500 of the SRT challengers have been reserved for Canada ( it is a Canadian made car after all) but that they can not take orders until April 2008 . At least you good neighbours had a change to order one — we have to wait another five months and watch what is happening south of the border.
well dodge i am sorry to tell you this, but you dont have the best track record with releasing cars. somehow dodge allways finds a way to screw it up! all i have wanted, since the release of the challenger concept, is to purchase one. dodge has made it very difficult for me though. as of right now i am on a list of about twenty people and i will have to fight them to get. so i wish they would have done a better job of releasing it!
Well, Thanks to some of the greedy dealers out there, They are gonna kill this car and ruin for many of us…Dodge are you listing??? Do you care??? Don’t let this happen!!! This is your greatest moment and for whatever reason your letting greedy dealerships ruin something speacil. If this is what I will have to deal with when I am ready for my purchase…I’m sad to say you’ll just have to count me out. =(…

I can’t believe the markups that I am hearing. My dealer only charged me $1,000.00 deposit and they are not marking up the car at all. I called them the moment I saw the pricing revealed, which worked out for me because on Monday they changed the deposit to $4,000.00, but still are not going to markup the vehicle
I guess it pays to be an “early bird”.
My dealer had me second on the list and my order was put in around 9:05 EST on Monday. But FRONTYARDRESTOGUY the problem is that even if your order is put in the system your order has to be confirmed by the factory, which means that they reserved a car for you. All dealers may get 1, 2 if they are lucky

Re Price: My local dealer in Michigan had my name on list for months to contact so when I call them today they tell me highest bidder gets it. Their rough guess was 70 to 80 thousand US$. Well count me out. I’ll dodge that ram job. I’m sure you’ll delete this post. You can take me off mailing list too while your at it.

I KNOW THAT IT HAD TO BE WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF THE ORDER SYSTEM COMING ONLINE.
WHAT A BUNCH OF CRYBABYS. DODGE HAS RELEASED THIS CAR EARLY. THATS WHY QUANTITY COLORS AND OPTIONS ARE LIMITED ON THE FIRST BATCH. THEY HAVE LISTENED TO OVERWHELMING DEMAND AND HAVE TRIED TO GET THIS CAR TO MARKET FASTER THAN MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE. ANYONE ON THIS BLOG KNEW THE FRIDAY BEFORE THESE CARS WERE GOING ON SALE, THAT MONDAY WAS THE DAY TO ORDER. FRIDAY WAS THE DAY TO PURCHASE. YOU SNOOZE YOU LOSE. ON THE LETTER THE DEALER WAS SENT, (YEAH, I GOT IT) IT STATES THAT THE FIRST BATCH OF CARS WILL BE PRODUCED IN APRIL. AND NOT TO WORRY AS ORDERS WILL BE TAKEN FOR MORE CHALLENGERS SHORTLY AFTERWARDS.
I am glad to see that the Challenger is a great success!! With the unprecedented demand for this car, why is Dodge holding back production? Heck, they should build as many cars to meet the demand. This from a company that lost 1.6 Billion Dollars this qurter alone! Yet, they are tight-lipped about info, and are making it hard for anyone who is intrested in buying this car. Hey, Bob Nordelli, Chrysler/Dodge has been running in the “Red” for years. Crank up production and maybe you can start running in the black. And possibly save a few thousand jobs!!

Right now i don’t even care about the cars coming out late in 08′ I want to wait and see what the convertible costs first and if i can get that im getting that but if it’s not affordable then i guess it’ll be perfect time late in 09′ to buy my black 6.1 hard-top…. it’s hard to say that cause i want a drop-top so bad right now… but i also want this body and this 6.1 engine engine even more so all ya’ll can cry for 6 or 7 months just to buy the car in late summer anyway then your gonna be mad you didn’t get the drop-top like me in late 09′ haha. Keep crying buy a mustang and i’ll smoke it like the tires on my challenger im getting no matter what late in 09′ baby your sous chef sully….

Same markup or more than the Mustang Shelbys **GAURUNTEED** $20k and up for 2008 and 2009 SRT’s MAYBE down to $10k and up markup even with the non-SRT’s release in 2009. Who knows the markup may even stay at $20k and up. This vehicle WILL follow in the 2007 Shelby GT500 mustang’s dealership price gouging foot steps. So if you people who put money down want to know ahead of time how your going to get screwed by your dealers, do some web surfing on how Ford dealerships screwed Shelby GT500 depositors. I myself waited a year and a half and just bought my Shelby GT500 for $5K over MSRP.

I tried to put a down payment on the challenger but unfortunately I was late by an hour with the dealership. The dealership was very helpful and informatinve. However, when I contacted another dealership in Naugatuck Connecticut, all was all set to put a down paymentn on the car limited edition model until the dealer quoted me a price of $84,000. Needless to say I walked out in disgust with this dealer, never to return to this dealership again. The dealer stated it was an adjustment for the dealership because the car was in such demand. I went back to the original dealer I spoke to and put a down payment on the 2009.
well, heres a mix of emotions for you. im very excited to see the challenger is a reality. extremely disapointed that i still dont know much info on it. and utterly disguisted knowing that i was number two on my dealers list monday, and probably wont get one.
reading these blogs are not helping either. too many assumptions and half-truths.
i wish someone from dodge would come out with answers already………..
all i know is this marketing strategy is having a negative effect on me, if im denyed a car after being number two on the list for almost a year. i swear that i will never purchase another chrysler product again. my new street rod will be a cobra mustang.
My local dealership doesn’t have a clue. Needless to say I’m miffed. I’ve waited 30 years for this car and these knuckle heads are totally in the dark.

Chally…..thank you so much for posting that. If these guys had been reading the information for the last month they would know that 5K of the 2008 will ship in early spring and by July there will be 10K 2009 models of the manual version plus no telling how many of the V-6 engines.

Why is this so difficult for people to understand? There will be approximately 5,000 2008 models which will all be delivered during 2008. The 2009 models will be a much larger production run and you will be able to get one in 4th quarter of 2008 - Just like you can go get a 2008 Caravan right now (in 2007). We’re talking about a difference in time of a few months on when we will be able to get a 2009 vs a 2008 model. What is the big deal??
OK you know what, the “this is unprecedented.” statement just makes me laugh. Because this is exactly what happens when you build cars that people want….they sell. How hard is that to figure out?
I have to echo the previous comment. I have bought new mopars exclusively since 1976. Waited long for the Charger only to be severely disappointed by its styling. Did Not Buy. Another chance with Challenger? Too few cars - Too much money. My Intrepid will be my last mopar. I too will be shopping Mustang!!!
your article fails to say what I was just told at the local dodge dealership. only 5000 vehicles are being made? with around 5400 dodge dealerships nationwide, that leaves at least 400 without any - if each dealership gets 1 car. if this is the case, i will say that i am driving the last dodge vehicle i will own. i have been waiting like everyone else for this car to be made, just to find out that clearly, it will take a very wealthy individual to be able to afford one of these cars. guess i’ll have to hope that the new camaro is a better deal, or start looking at a mustang.
Is there going to be a delete option for the rear spoiler? Its uglying the rear end up.
